# API and MCP overview

> Read AlphaYou's stock research data from your own code or your AI assistant. 4 ways in.

AlphaYou's research data comes from public records: SEC filings (company 8-Ks, insider Form 4 trades, fund 13F holdings) and public Hyperliquid positions. Every answer carries its source link and its date, so you can check it yourself.

You can read it 4 ways. Pick the one that fits what you are building.

## Pick your way in

| Way in | Address | Key needed | What you get |
| - | - | - | - |
| Research MCP, no key | `https://alphayou.net/api/mcp/market` | No | 19 read-only research tools for AI assistants |
| Hosted MCP, keyed | `https://api.alphayou.net/api/v1/mcp` | Yes, sent as a Bearer token | The keyed tools: 4 on Free, 9 on Pro |
| REST API | `https://api.alphayou.net` | Yes | The same datasets as plain web requests |
| npm package | `npx -y alphayou-mcp` | Yes | The keyed tools, run from your own machine |

> [!NOTE]
>
> MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the standard way an AI assistant calls outside tools. If you only want answers in a chat, the no-key research MCP is the fastest start.

## Where to start

* **You want answers in a chat assistant.** Add the no-key research MCP. In Claude Code:

  ```bash theme={null}
  claude mcp add --transport http alphayou-research "https://alphayou.net/api/mcp/market"
  ```

  Other apps: [Connect Claude](https://docs.alphayou.net/api/connect-claude.md), [Connect ChatGPT](https://docs.alphayou.net/api/connect-chatgpt.md), [Connect Cursor and other apps](https://docs.alphayou.net/api/connect-cursor-and-others.md). Every tool is listed in the [Tool catalog](https://docs.alphayou.net/api/tool-catalog.md).

* **You are building something with code.** Follow the [Quickstart](https://docs.alphayou.net/api/quickstart.md). You get a free key and make your first call in about 5 minutes. Want ideas? See the [Recipes](https://docs.alphayou.net/api/recipes.md).

## Free and Pro in one look

| | Free | Pro |
| - | - | - |
| Price | \$0, no card | $49 a month or $399 a year |
| Datasets | 4 | 9 |
| Daily allowance | 100 request units, shared by all your keys | 50,000 request units per key |

Pro is billed separately from the consumer AlphaYou plan. Full details are on [Plans and limits](https://docs.alphayou.net/api/plans-and-limits.md).

## What the data is, and is not

* It is **read-only research**: who filed what, when, with a link to the original record.
* It is **delayed by law**. An insider trade can show up 2 business days after it happens. A fund's holdings can show up 45 days after the quarter ends. See [Conventions](https://docs.alphayou.net/api/conventions.md).
* It is **not advice**. AlphaYou gives the same facts to everyone and never says what to buy or sell.
* It **cannot trade**. No wallet connection, signing, funding, copy trading or alert creation is available through the API or MCP.
* The keyed API does not return the financial disclosure reports of members of Congress or of executive branch officials.

## Before you build a product on it

The API terms set what you may do with the data. The short version is on [What you may do with the data](https://docs.alphayou.net/api/data-use.md). The contract itself is the [API terms](https://alphayou.net/legal/api-terms).
